The Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens is holding its ever popular annual networking event at Battleby Abbey near Perth on October 5th. This event is open to any one interested in community, therapeutic or allotment gardening.
There is a full programme of workshops and SAGS’ secretary Jenny Mollison is offering an exciting one in collaboration with Landscape Architect Liz Thomas. This workshop is entitled “Using Scotland’s Allotment Site Design Guide to make the most of your new community garden or allotment”.
The site design guide is currently being prepared by a steering group which arose from the Scottish Government’s Grow Your Own Working Group. It responds to an identified need for best practice guidance which addresses some of the planning and practical issues associated with establishing new allotments.
The guide aims to provide information about how to design and create a good site for allotments or community growing. It covers topics such as how to ensure the site is well integrated into the local landscape, make best use of available land and maximise use of available resources and existing features. The document is split into a series of sections covering land, infrastructure, plots, community areas, biodiversity and green space.
The networking event is very reasonably priced, with a big discount for members of community groups or voluntary organisations. For more details and to book a place at the event go to their web site at:
